VMWare

Years ago I purchased a license to run a VMWare virtual machine on my Linux desktop machine. There’s still a dormant Windows 95 machine consuming most of the hard disk of that box. When the next version of VMWare was released the upgrade fee was exhorbitant, so I never bothered with it. Now VMWare have [...]

Excess Mass Detected

I made the error of standing on the bathroom scales yesterday, and was shocked at the largeness of the numbers displayed. I currently weigh 18 stones and 11 pounds or just over 119 kilos. So it looks like moderate eating and moderate exercise are on the cards for the forseeable future. Damn, that is unbelievably [...]

Bucharest, Romania

This week I’ve been to Bucharest with Ruth and Shaun. I was working with Shaun and Ruth was on holiday. We arrived on Sunday late in the evening. Fortunately the Phoenicia Hotel is near the airport. Monday and Tuesday Shaun and I were working hard, 12 hours each day. Wednesday was easier, and Shaun travelled [...]

Goodbye Blogger, Hello WordPress

I’ve changed my blogging software. I no longer use Blogger, I’ve switched to WordPress. This gives me much more flexibility and control over the appearance of my blog. The main thing it does for me which Blogger doesn’t (or at least, not easily) is to provide links to the next and previous posts on permalink [...]

Phew! Back in the Xantia at last!

I’ve very pleased to say that I exchanged the Racing AX for my lovely Xantia V6 Exclusive this afternoon at BL Autos and Sons. For just over GBP600 I now have a new-second-hand gearbox and all looks to be good for now. Hurrah!

The Xantia V6 Lives On! And The Benz Is Back!

I’ve asked BL Autos and Sons to get the second hand gearbox and fit it to the Xantia. They have received it now, although it seems the end plate was damaged in transit. The supplier is still prepared to offer their 90 day warranty provided BL swap the end plate from the old box. So [...]

External Hard Disk Backup

Recently, Martyn gave me a 250Gb hard disk in a box so that I can back up my home PCs. Martyn has upgraded to a 500Gb system. It connects to the PC with a USB cable. I asked Linux to check the drive for bad blocks and create an ext3 filesystem over the whole disk. [...]

Citroen Xantia V6 – Deceased

I was driving home last night and the engine started making an extra noise. This morning on the way to work, I got to Denham and lost all drive. Fortunately Green Flag Rescue came along and took me to BL Autos and Sons in Welwyn Garden City. The problem was diagnosed as a knackered gearbox. [...]

Abuse of English

the language, not the people. This is the first of an infrequent series dedicated to rants about abuse of the English language The topic today is the word ‘unique’. Unique means the only one of its type in the world, unlike any other. So it follows that the property of uniqueness is either true or [...]

Wikipedia

The Wikipedia has just passed the 1,000,000 english articles milestone. Hurrah! I’m pleased to say that I started and contributed to the Uxbridge Tube Station article, amongst others It strikes me that contributing to the Wikipedia is like doing charity work or working for a ‘good cause’. I’m certainly pleased to be able to make [...]
