Years ago I purchased a license to run a VMWare virtual machine on my Linux desktop machine. There’s still a dormant Windows 95 machine consuming most of the hard disk of that box. When the next version of VMWare was released the upgrade fee was exhorbitant, so I never bothered with it.
Now VMWare have released their product as free (beta version) software. So I downloaded the software for Linux and installed a spare copy of Windows 98.
So now I have a Windows 98 virtual machine on my new desktop box. My only criticism so far is that it runs very slowly. I suspect that this may be due to a lack of main memory. The virtual machine is limited to 128Mb, and the box has 313Mb total. Now that seems like a very strange total to me – maybe I have some failed memory on one of my DIMMs.
Looks like it’s time to fire up the old Windows 95 machine and see if there’s anything I need to save from it

The beta of VMware Server has a mandatory debug option turned on. The production release should be faster. In the meantime, try VMware Player. It’s also free.
